How it works

Three steps, at the table

  1. Snap the menu.

Take a photo, or pick one from your camera roll. Any language: dishes stay as printed, never translated.

  2. Basila reads, then weighs each dish.

An AI model reads what's written, then weighs every dish for animals and the planet, quantities included, counted equally, in one list. No sections: three starters can outrank a main.

  3. Choose.

The three best choices get a ★. Tap any dish to see what's in it and how it ranks. If the menu leaves a doubt, you get the question to ask your waiter; if it says too little, the dish keeps its place, without a ★.

Ask your waiter

"Which species is it, and where is it from?"

  • One ranked list

From best to heaviest, starters, mains and desserts together. The three best choices get a ★.

  • Two scales, in words

Animal suffering and Planet: five bars and a word each, from "Very light" to "Heaviest". Never a number.

  • Named reasons

No vague verdict: when something moves a dish, it's named.

  • A question for the waiter

When the menu leaves a doubt, Basila gives you the question to ask. If the doubt is too big, the dish stays out of the top 3.

Principles

Honest by design

For less animal suffering and less climate impact, without the lecture.

  • No scores, no kilos on your plate.

On purpose: a ranking is enough to choose well. No score and no carbon figure on a dish: its place in the list, and two scales in words.

  • The model reads and weighs each dish.

An AI model reads the menu and weighs each dish, quantities included, and says why. It can miss or misread a dish. Something off? Tell Basila: a human reads every message.

  • Your photo is only for reading the menu.

It isn't kept after a successful scan. If a scan fails, it's kept seven days at most so we can see what went wrong, then erased automatically.

  • No ads, no tracking in the app.

No GPS either, and no password: your e-mail is your account. Export your data or delete your account from the app.

This site sets no cookies; its audience measurement is cookieless and only produces aggregated statistics.

  • Allergies aren't covered.

Ethivore helps you choose. It doesn't replace asking your waiter. It's not a health app: no calories, no nutrition.

The offer

Your first scan is free

Ethivore+

After that, Ethivore+ gives you unlimited scans, monthly or for life, bought in the app.

Ethivore+ unlocks unlimited scans and nothing else: everything else is the same for everyone.

The price is the one your store shows. This website sells nothing.

Invite friends: you get 2 scans each time one of them finishes their first.

A photo that can't be read doesn't use a scan.

Questions

Before you order

Do I have to be vegan or vegetarian?

No. Ethivore never asks what you eat and never labels you. It ranks the whole menu, meat and fish included, and you choose.

How does Basila decide?

An AI model reads what's written on the menu, then weighs each dish on two scales that count the same, for one serving as the menu serves it. One is animal suffering. The other is the planet: climate footprint and fish to avoid. Crumbled feta doesn't weigh what a raclette does. In the app, "Why this order?" explains the method and its sources.

Can it get things wrong?

Yes. The model can miss or misread a dish, so glance back at the menu in front of you. When the menu leaves a doubt, you get a question for your waiter. If something's off, tell Basila in the app: a human reads every message.

What about allergies?

Ethivore doesn't cover allergies, calories or nutrition. Always ask your waiter.

What happens to my photo and my data?

The photo is sent to be read, and isn't kept after a successful scan; after a failed one, seven days at most. Your account holds your e-mail, your scan count and your last 30 menus, so you find them after a reinstall; what you write to Basila is kept too. Export it all, or delete your account from the app: your messages to Basila then stay, without your e-mail. Read the privacy policy (in French)

How much does it cost?

Your first scan is free, and a photo that can't be read doesn't use it up. Invite a friend and you get 2 scans after their first. For unlimited scans, Ethivore+ is sold in the app through the App Store or Google Play, monthly or as a one-time lifetime purchase, at the price your store shows. This website sells nothing.

When can I get it?
